It is winter on the prairies and the migratory birds are long gone. One of our favourite birds to see is the mountain bluebird. The males have a brilliant blue plumage that never fails to bring joy to my heart. What a treat to spy one of these beauties!
You can encourage bluebirds to come to your area by putting up nest boxes. Remember to point them east to face way from those strong west winds, and also to not overheat from the southern sunlight. If you have nest boxes on your property, consider doing a winter clean out. Sometimes we find mice in the boxes, so bring your handy farm cat along for a free lunch.
